The word "tarantula" is the common name for a group of hairy and often very large spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae, of which approximately 900 species have been identified. They mainly eat insects, using the method of ambush as their primary weapon. Larger tarantulas have been known to kill animals as large as lizards, mice, or birds! While they may look menacing due to their looks (and their reputation), most tarantulas are actually harmless to humans. No tarantula is known to have a bite that is definitely lethal to humans-although a bite may be painful, the few cases in which a human has had severe symptoms from a tarantula bite is due to an allergic reaction to the venom, rather then to the actual venom. You gotta admit, these creatures still look a little freaky.
Why worry about messing around with a live tarantula when you can get a real one already prepared for you to examine anyways? Students, teachers and insect fans needn't worry, this tarantula won't scurry away or bite! This is a great specimen of a REAL tarantula mounted in a clear acrylic block. Great Christmas or birthday item for the young science student or for the serious entomologist! Everyone will be commenting in your unique gift-giving idea!
