This name is derived from the Greek word phasma, which means an apparition or phantom, and refers to many species of this insect resembling the look and color of sticks, leaves or even lichen! The Lord Howe Island stick insect was once thought to be extinct, but in 2001, researchers found 20-30 living under a shrub on Ball's Island in Australia.
